The rapid test for detection of Borrelia burgdorferi antibodies in dogs
For the easy and fast on-site detection of antibodies against Borrelia burgdorferi antigens in whole blood, serum and plasma of dogs.
Lyme disease belongs to the diseases transmitted by vectors (ticks). The pathogen Borrelia burgdorferi is a gram-negative, spiral-shaped and movable bacterium (spirochete). Worldwide, at least 13 genospecies are belonging to the Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (Bsl) complex. The three most important species B. burgdorferi sensu stricto (Bss), B. garinii (Bg) and B. afzelii (Ba) are also pathogenic for humans. For dogs, the pathogenicity of B. burgdorferi sensu stricto has been verified.
Its natural reservoir has Borrelia in wild animals. They are transmitted by ticks of the species Ixodes ricinus. An infection does not always lead to an immediate disease, it may take a long time (2-5 months) before a disease outbreak. The clinical picture of the disease in dogs often develops insidiously and is characterized by nonspecific symptoms such as apathy, lymphadenopathy and intermittent fever. As possible clinical manifestations are described infection-related arthritis in one or more joints with partially changing lameness and occasionally glomerulopathies.
Even under an effective antibiotic therapy a complete elimination of the pathogens is difficult, therefore any early detection of an infection is essential.
